Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a sheepskin underlay and a wool mattress topper?
A sheepskin underlay is a real sheepskin pelt with the wool still attached to the hide leather, finished with a neat fabric backing and elastic straps to hold it in place. A wool mattress topper has carded wool layered inside a quilted fabric casing. Both add warmth and breathability, the sheepskin underlay gives that distinctive springy pressure relief and lasts for many years, while a wool topper is lighter to handle and easier to roll up.
Will a sheepskin bed underlay help with back, hip or joint pain?
Many customers find it does. The dense wool fibres cushion pressure points at the hips, shoulders and lower back, and distribute weight more evenly across the mattress. People with arthritis, fibromyalgia, recovery from surgery, or simply an older mattress that's lost its support often report better sleep after adding one. It isn't a medical claim, results vary, but it's by far the most common reason customers buy.
Are sheepskin underlays too warm for summer?
No. Wool is thermoregulating, it absorbs and releases moisture into the air, which means it keeps you warm in winter and noticeably cooler in summer than synthetic toppers or memory foam. The 'cool in summer, warm in winter' effect is one of wool's signature properties.
How often should I wash a sheepskin underlay and how?
Lanolin in the wool makes sheepskin largely self-cleaning, so daily airing and occasional spot cleaning is enough for most homes. For a full wash, machine or hand wash every few months in warm water (max 40C) with Woolskin Wool Wash. No enzymes, no bleach. Dry flat over several lines and gently reshape while damp. The Classic Sheepskins underlay we currently stock is fully washable; older Bowron underlays were dry clean only, so always check the care label first.
What sizes do you offer?
Our rectangle sheepskin bed covers come in seven sizes, Single, King Single, Double, Queen, King and Super King, with elastic straps to hold them in place on the mattress. We also stock natural-shape pelt underlays from single pelt up to 8-pelt, which work well as a smaller comfort layer on a chair or just down one side of the bed.
