Rectangular Sheepskin Rugs | Genuine NZ Sheepskin

Bring natural warmth and luxury into your home with our Rectangular Sheepskin Rugs, expertly crafted from carefully selected New Zealand sheepskins. Multiple pelts are individually matched, trimmed and sewn together to create a beautifully balanced rectangular rug with a luxurious, consistent wool surface.

Available in sizes from 4 to 16 pelts, these substantial sheepskin rugs are ideal for living rooms, bedrooms and larger open spaces where you want to introduce the unmistakable softness, warmth and natural character of genuine sheepskin.

Made from premium New Zealand-grown sheepskins, each individual pelt is carefully selected for its wool density, softness, length and overall appearance. Considerable skill goes into matching and positioning the pelts so they blend beautifully together before being expertly joined to create the finished rectangular shape.

The sheepskins are tanned and the finished rugs are crafted in New Zealand using a gentle tanning process without harsh chemicals, helping preserve the natural softness, lustre and character of the wool.

Available in Ivory White, Honey, Grey, Chocolate and Black. Our Ivory White retains the natural creamy-white colouring of genuine sheepskin rather than being a bright artificial white, so subtle cream and ivory undertones are part of its authentic character.

As genuine sheepskin is a natural product, no two rugs are exactly alike. Small variations in wool length, texture and colour are part of what makes every finished rug unique.

Rectangular Sheepskin Rug Sizes

Our multi-pelt rectangular rugs are available in a range of sizes to suit different rooms and spaces:

  • 4 Pelt: 2 pelts wide × 2 pelts long – approx. 150 × 94 cm (59 × 37 in.)

  • 6 Pelt: 2 pelts wide × 3 pelts long – approx. 150 × 140 cm (59 × 55 in.)

  • 8 Pelt: 2 pelts wide × 4 pelts long – approx. 150 × 186 cm (59 × 73 in.)

  • 10 Pelt: 2 pelts wide × 5 pelts long – approx. 150 × 234 cm (59 × 92 in.)

  • 12 Pelt: 2 pelts wide × 6 pelts long – approx. 150 × 279 cm (59 × 110 in.)

  • Wide 12 Pelt: 3 pelts wide × 4 pelts long – approx. 222 × 184 cm (87 × 72 in.)

Because every sheepskin is naturally shaped and each rug is individually crafted, finished measurements are approximate and may vary slightly.

Made to Order in New Zealand

Our larger rectangular sheepskin rugs are made to order in New Zealand. Our tannery carefully selects individual sheepskins for each rug, matching the wool colour, length, density and overall appearance before expertly joining the pelts together.

Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for your rug to be made before it is ready to ship. For particularly large or custom rugs, additional time may occasionally be required to source enough closely matched sheepskins.

As each large rug is individually made, we recommend checking your required dimensions and choosing your preferred colour carefully before placing your order.

Caring for Your Rectangular Sheepskin Rug

Regular Care: Regular brushing with a sheepskin care brush helps lift and separate the wool fibres, maintain their softness and reduce matting. When practical, gently shaking your rug or carefully vacuuming it using a low-suction setting can also help remove loose dust and debris.

Spot Cleaning: Attend to spills promptly using cold or lukewarm water and a suitable wool or sheepskin detergent. Blot and clean gently rather than rubbing vigorously, and avoid unnecessarily soaking the leather beneath the wool.

Professional Cleaning: Although genuine sheepskin can be washed, we do not recommend washing our larger multi-pelt rugs at home. Large sheepskin rugs become extremely heavy when wet and can be difficult to handle and dry evenly without affecting their shape or softness. For a thorough clean, we recommend using a professional cleaner experienced with genuine sheepskin or leather-backed wool rugs.

What to Avoid: Do not use hot water, bleach, fabric softeners or conventional detergents containing enzymes. Avoid tumble drying and keep wet or damp sheepskin away from radiators, heaters and other sources of direct heat.

With regular brushing, prompt attention to spills and professional cleaning when required, your New Zealand sheepskin rug can retain its beautiful softness, natural character and luxurious wool finish for many years.

Shipping Your Sheepskin Rug

We ship our New Zealand sheepskin rugs to customers throughout New Zealand, the United States and worldwide.

Larger rugs are carefully packed and compressed for international shipping to keep the parcel as compact and well protected as possible during transit. When your rug first arrives, the wool may therefore appear slightly flattened or compressed.

Once unpacked, lay the rug flat and give it a gentle shake followed by a thorough brushing with a sheepskin care brush. This will help lift and separate the wool fibres and restore the rug's natural loft and luxurious appearance. The wool will continue to relax naturally after unpacking.

Please remember to allow the 2–3 week made-to-order timeframe for larger rugs before shipping. Once your rug has been completed and dispatched, tracking details will be emailed to you so you can follow its journey.

A Timeless Piece of New Zealand

A genuine sheepskin rug is more than simply a floor covering. It introduces natural texture, warmth and character into your home while showcasing the beauty of one of New Zealand's most iconic natural materials.

With its luxuriously soft long wool, carefully matched pelts and expert New Zealand craftsmanship, a Kiwi Sheepskins Rectangular Sheepskin Rug is designed to become a beautiful part of your home for many years to come.

Sheepskin Rug Care

Keep your sheepskin soft and fresh with simple regular care.

Routine maintenance

Shake out your rug every couple of weeks and give it a gentle brush once or twice a month using a slicker or Bowron Care Brush. This keeps the fibres fluffy and removes dust in just a minute or two.

Spot cleaning

For small marks, use cold water and a natural soap or Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Dampen a soft scrub brush, apply a little soap, and gently work the area until clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry. Hang in the shade and allow it to air dry - never use direct heat or sunlight.

Deep cleaning

Hand wash only when needed using cold water and Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Avoid machine washing, bleach, or hot water as these can damage the leather backing.

Freshen up

To absorb odours or moisture, sprinkle baking soda onto the wool, leave for about an hour, then brush or vacuum it out.

With regular brushing and gentle care, your sheepskin rug will stay beautifully soft for years. Learn more on how to care for your wool rug with our care guide.

Rectangular Sheepskin Rugs | Genuine NZ Sheepskin FAQs

Is it okay to place this rug in high traffic areas?
Natural wool sheepskin rugs are durable and resilient, but heavy foot traffic can flatten the wool and cause uneven wear. They are best used in low to moderate traffic zones like bedrooms, living rooms and seating areas.
How should I store this rug when not in use?
Store Kiwi Sheepskins Sheepskin Rugs in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Use a breathable cotton storage bag instead of plastic to allow air circulation, which helps prevent mildew and preserve the wool’s texture.
Can I wash my sheepskin rug in a washing machine?
Most natural wool sheepskin rugs including premium grade ones should not be put in a regular washing machine because agitation and heat can damage the leather backing and matt the wool fibres. Hand washing in cool water with a wool-safe shampoo is generally recommended for deep cleaning. If machine washing is considered at all, only do so on a delicate wool cycle inside a protective laundry bag and check any care instructions first.
