Why Choose a Circular Sheepskin Rug?

Bring natural softness and distinctive design into your home with our Circular Sheepskin Rug, handcrafted in New Zealand from carefully selected premium New Zealand sheepskins.

Unlike traditional natural-shape or rectangular sheepskin rugs, this design combines multiple individual pelts to create a beautifully balanced round shape. The result is a luxurious statement rug that showcases the softness and texture of genuine long-wool sheepskin in a contemporary circular design.

Available in 1.5 metre and 2.0 metre diameters, these generously sized rugs work beautifully beneath a round dining or coffee table, in a bedroom, reading area or as a striking centrepiece in a larger living space.

Premium Long-Wool New Zealand Sheepskin

Each circular rug is crafted from premium-grade long-wool sheepskin, with a luxurious wool length of approximately 64 mm (2.5 inches).

Creating a circular rug requires considerable skill. Individual sheepskins are carefully selected and matched for their wool colour, length, density and overall appearance before being expertly positioned and joined to create the finished round shape.

The dense long wool provides an exceptionally soft and inviting surface while adding natural warmth, depth and texture to the room.

Our sheepskins are New Zealand-grown, and each finished circular rug is made in New Zealand.

A Round Sheepskin Rug for Modern Interiors

The circular shape provides an alternative to traditional rectangular rugs and can work particularly well in spaces where you want to soften straight architectural lines or create a defined focal point.

A round sheepskin rug can be used:

  • Beneath a round dining or coffee table

  • In the centre of a living room

  • Beside or at the foot of a bed

  • In a reading corner or relaxation space

  • As a luxurious feature in an open-plan interior

The generous long wool also introduces natural texture, making the rug equally suited to contemporary, minimalist, rustic and traditional interiors.

Choose from Five Colours

Our Circular Sheepskin Rugs are currently available in Sand, Honey, Chocolate, Grey and Black.

Sand – A soft, warm neutral that complements light timber, natural fabrics and relaxed interiors.

Honey – A warm golden shade that pairs beautifully with timber, leather and earthy tones.

Chocolate – A rich, deep brown that adds warmth and depth to a room.

Grey – A versatile neutral suited to contemporary and understated interiors.

Black – A bold, sophisticated choice that creates striking contrast.

Because genuine sheepskin is a natural material, no two circular rugs will ever be exactly alike. Subtle differences in wool texture, colour and character are a natural part of each finished rug.

Circular Sheepskin Rug Sizes

Choose from two generous sizes:

1.5 m Diameter – approximately 150 cm / 4.9 ft

2.0 m Diameter – approximately 200 cm / 6.5 ft

Both sizes are constructed from multiple carefully matched sheepskin pelts to create the finished circular shape.

Before ordering, we recommend measuring your intended space carefully. For larger rooms, the 2 metre rug creates a considerably stronger visual statement, while the 1.5 metre size offers the same luxurious look in a more compact footprint.

Made to Order in New Zealand

Every Circular Sheepskin Rug is made to order in New Zealand.

Rather than producing these rugs in bulk, individual sheepskins are selected and matched specifically for each rug before being carefully joined and finished.

Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for your rug to be made before shipping.

The time involved in selecting closely matched pelts is an important part of creating a balanced finished rug, particularly with a large circular design where differences between individual sheepskins can be more noticeable.

How to Care for a Large Circular Sheepskin Rug

With regular care, your sheepskin rug can retain its beautiful softness and natural appearance for many years.

Regular Care: Gently shake the rug when practical and brush the wool periodically with a sheepskin care brush. This helps lift and separate the long wool fibres and reduce matting. A low-suction vacuum without a rotating brush can also be used to remove loose dust and debris.

Spot Cleaning: Attend to spills promptly. Blot gently with cold or lukewarm water and a detergent specifically suitable for genuine sheepskin. Avoid vigorous rubbing and unnecessary soaking of the leather backing.

Professional Cleaning: Because these circular rugs are constructed from multiple pelts and measure up to 2 metres across, we don't recommend washing them at home. A large sheepskin rug becomes extremely heavy when wet and can be difficult to handle and dry evenly.

For a thorough clean, we recommend using a professional cleaner experienced with genuine sheepskin or leather-backed wool rugs.

What to Avoid: Do not use hot water, bleach, fabric softeners or conventional detergents containing enzymes. Avoid tumble drying and keep wet sheepskin away from radiators, heaters and direct heat.

Shipping & What to Expect When Your Rug Arrives

Your Circular Sheepskin Rug will be carefully packed for delivery.

Because of the volume of long wool, the rug may be compressed during shipping, and the wool can appear slightly flattened when you first unpack it. This is completely normal.

Lay the rug flat, gently shake it and brush through the wool with a sheepskin care brush. This will help separate and lift the fibres, and the wool will continue to relax and regain its natural loft after unpacking.

Once your rug has been completed and dispatched, tracking information will be provided so you can follow its journey.

A Unique New Zealand Sheepskin Statement Piece

A Circular Sheepskin Rug combines the extraordinary softness of premium long-wool sheepskin with a distinctive shape that sets it apart from traditional sheepskin rugs.

Whether positioned beneath a round table, used to define a seating area or simply given space to become a feature of the room, its luxurious wool, generous proportions and New Zealand craftsmanship make it a beautiful addition to the home.

Made to order from carefully matched premium sheepskins, each rug has its own individual natural character — creating a piece that is as unique as the home it becomes part of.

Sheepskin Rug Care

Keep your sheepskin soft and fresh with simple regular care.

Routine maintenance

Shake out your rug every couple of weeks and give it a gentle brush once or twice a month using a slicker or Bowron Care Brush. This keeps the fibres fluffy and removes dust in just a minute or two.

Spot cleaning

For small marks, use cold water and a natural soap or Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Dampen a soft scrub brush, apply a little soap, and gently work the area until clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry. Hang in the shade and allow it to air dry - never use direct heat or sunlight.

Deep cleaning

Hand wash only when needed using cold water and Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Avoid machine washing, bleach, or hot water as these can damage the leather backing.

Freshen up

To absorb odours or moisture, sprinkle baking soda onto the wool, leave for about an hour, then brush or vacuum it out.

With regular brushing and gentle care, your sheepskin rug will stay beautifully soft for years. Learn more on how to care for your wool rug with our care guide.

Circular Sheepskin Rug | Round NZ Sheepskin Rug FAQs

How do I clean and care for my rug to keep the wool soft and looking beautiful?
To care for Kiwi Sheepskins Classic Premium Sheepskin Rug and other wool sheepskin rugs, regular maintenance is key. Shake the rug outdoors or use a gentle vacuum (no rotating brush) to remove dust and dirt. For spot cleaning, use a wool-safe detergent and dab gently instead of rubbing. Deep cleaning is best done by hand washing in cool water with a wool shampoo, then air drying flat away from direct heat or sunlight to avoid damaging the wool and leather backing.
Can I wash my sheepskin rug in a washing machine?
Most natural wool sheepskin rugs including premium grade ones should not be put in a regular washing machine because agitation and heat can damage the leather backing and matt the wool fibres. Hand washing in cool water with a wool-safe shampoo is generally recommended for deep cleaning. If machine washing is considered at all, only do so on a delicate wool cycle inside a protective laundry bag and check any care instructions first.
How heavy is a quarto size sheepskin rug?
Kiwi Sheepskins Classic Premium Sheepskin Rug Quarto is heavier than single or double rugs due to being made from four pelts. The weight helps it stay in place once laid flat.
