Product Information
The ultimate in sheepskin rugs. Experience the finest sheepskin rugs, expertly tanned and crafted in New Zealand. These natural-shaped rugs are fashioned from ten carefully selected pelts, ideal for covering large floor areas. Each rug is created by matching premium-quality pelts and skilfully stitching them together.
Available in a range of colours including Ivory White, Black, Grey, Honey, and Chocolate.Â
Dyed rugs are custom-created and typically ship within 4 to 21 days; please note that once production begins, cancellations are not possible, and exchanges or refunds are only offered for defects. Variations in dye absorption may occur due to natural wool characteristics and dye batch differences.
What Makes This a Genuine Sheep Fur Rug
A sheep fur rug in this category is built from individual animal pelts: hide, leather backing, and wool fibre all intact and joined together. This is not a tufted or woven imitation. Each pelt used in this Kiwi Sheepskins rug retains its original lanolin-treated leather, which is what gives the backing its durability and the wool its natural resilience.
The wool on this rug measures approximately 64mm (about 2.5 inches) in length. That depth is long enough to visibly spread underfoot and create the layered, textured look most buyers associate with a premium sheep fur rug. Shorter-pile alternatives in the 20-40mm (about 0.8-1.6 inches) range feel noticeably flatter when laid side by side.
Because this is a multi-pelt construction, matching matters. The tanning team selects pelts with consistent wool density and colour before stitching begins. A poorly matched rug shows seam lines where wool density shifts abruptly. On this rug, the joins are hidden within the wool pile rather than sitting on top of it.
Size and Coverage: What 10 Pelts Actually Covers
The finished rug measures approximately 245cm long by 160cm wide (96in. x 63in.). To put that in a room context: it covers the full seating area of a standard three-seat sofa arrangement, with enough overhang to extend beyond the front legs of most couches. It also spans a queen-size bed lengthwise with around 40cm (about 15.75 inches) to spare at each end.
Below is how this rug compares to smaller multi-pelt options in the Kiwi Sheepskins range:
| Rug Size | Approx. Dimensions | Best Placement |
|---|---|---|
| Single pelt | ~90cm x 60cm (35in. x 24in.) | Armchair, bedside, pet area |
| 4-pelt | ~150cm x 90cm (59in. x 35in.) | Small lounge, bedroom foot-of-bed |
| 6-pelt | ~180cm x 120cm (71in. x 47in.) | Mid-size lounge, under a dining table for 4 |
| 10-pelt (this rug) | ~245cm x 160cm (96in. x 63in.) | Large lounge, open-plan living, king bed surround |
If you are measuring a specific zone, such as the space between a TV unit and a sofa, use the 245cm (96in.) length as your primary constraint. The natural pelt shape means the edges are irregular rather than squared off, so the rug can flex visually into corners or around furniture legs without looking forced.
Colour Options and How They Look in a Room
Seven colour options are available: Ivory White, Black, Brown Tip, Grey Tip, Honey, Chocolate, and Grey. The differences matter more at scale than they do on a single pelt, because a 245cm (96in.) rug is a visual anchor in a room rather than an accent.
Ivory White: Our lightest and most popular natural shade. Ivory White has a soft ivory tone rather than a pure white finish, making it ideal for bright, airy spaces. It pairs beautifully with light timber, neutral interiors, and Scandinavian-style décor. As the lightest colour, it may show dirt more readily but it's easy to brush and care for.
Grey: A modern, medium grey with subtle warm undertones rather than a cool charcoal finish. Grey works well with contemporary décor, stone, and neutral colour palettes, offering a balanced look that complements a wide range of interiors.
Honey: A warm, golden natural shade that complements timber furniture, leather sofas, and traditional interiors. Honey is one of our most versatile colours and is excellent at disguising everyday wear, making it a practical choice for busy homes.
Black: Our boldest and most dramatic colour. Black creates a striking contrast against lighter floors and furnishings and suits modern interiors. It is also one of the easiest colours to maintain in high-traffic areas.
Chocolate: A rich, deep brown that adds warmth and sophistication to any room. Chocolate pairs particularly well with timber furniture, earthy tones, and classic décor while being forgiving of everyday use.
Dyed colours are custom ordered to specification. Because natural wool absorbs dye unevenly between fibres, slight variation across the rug surface is expected and is a characteristic of the material rather than a defect.
Sheepskin Rug Care
Keep your sheepskin soft and fresh with simple regular care.
Routine maintenance shake out your rug every couple of weeks and give it a gentle brush once or twice a month using a slicker or Bowron Care Brush. This keeps the fibres fluffy and removes dust in just a minute or two.
Spot cleaning. For small marks, use cold water and a natural soap or Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Dampen a soft scrub brush, apply a little soap, and gently work the area until clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry. Hang in the shade and allow it to air dry - never use direct heat or sunlight.
Deep cleaning hand wash only when needed using cold water and Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Avoid machine washing, bleach, or hot water as these can damage the leather backing.
Freshen up to absorb odours or moisture, sprinkle baking soda onto the wool, leave for about an hour, then brush or vacuum it out.
With regular brushing and gentle care, your sheepskin rug will stay beautifully soft for years. Learn more on how to care for your wool rug with our care guide.
Where to Place an Extra-Large Sheep Fur Rug
At 245cm x 160cm (96in. x 63in.), placement decisions are more deliberate than they are with smaller rugs. A few scenarios where this size works well:
Under a lounge suite: Place the rug so the front legs of both the sofa and any flanking armchairs sit on the wool. This visually connects the seating group and defines the conversation zone without additional furniture.
Beside a king or super-king bed: Positioned lengthwise along one or both sides of the bed, the rug provides a soft landing from edge to edge. At 160cm (63in.) wide, it extends past a standard bedside table and well into the walking space.
Open-plan living areas: In a combined kitchen and living space, this rug is large enough to delineate the lounge zone from a tiled or polished floor area. The irregular pelt edge creates a natural boundary that a rectangular rug cannot replicate.
Statement layering: Laid over a flat-weave or sisal base rug, a sheep fur rug at this scale adds tactile contrast without visually overwhelming the room. The natural shape breaks up the grid of a rectangular base layer.
One usable note: the leather backing on a multi-pelt rug sits flat but is not a non-slip surface on its own. On polished timber or tiles, place a rug underlay beneath it.
