Why Choose a 10-Pelt Sheepskin Rug?

Our Classic Premium 10-Pelt Natural Shape Sheepskin Rug brings the softness and natural character of genuine New Zealand sheepskin to a much larger scale. Crafted from ten carefully selected and matched pelts, it's an impressive statement rug for larger living rooms, bedrooms and open spaces.

Unlike a rectangular rug with straight trimmed edges, this design retains the distinctive natural contours of the individual sheepskins, creating an organic outline that celebrates the character of the material.

Each premium New Zealand-grown sheepskin is selected for its wool density, softness, length, colour and overall appearance. Considerable skill goes into matching and positioning all ten pelts so they blend beautifully together and create a balanced, luxurious wool surface.

The sheepskins are tanned and the finished rug is crafted in New Zealand using a gentle tanning process without harsh chemicals, helping preserve the natural softness, lustre and character of the wool.

Choose from Five Natural Colours

Our 10-pelt rugs are available in:

Ivory White – A natural creamy-white with subtle cream and ivory undertones rather than a bright artificial white.

Honey – A warm golden shade that pairs beautifully with timber, leather and natural interiors.

Grey – A versatile medium grey suited to contemporary and neutral spaces.

Chocolate – A rich, deep brown that adds warmth and depth to a room.

Black – A bold, sophisticated choice for creating striking contrast.

Because genuine sheepskin is a natural material, no two 10-pelt rugs will ever be exactly alike. Subtle variations in the natural outline, wool length, texture and colour are part of what makes each finished rug unique.

Made to Order in New Zealand

Every 10-pelt rug is made to order in New Zealand.

For each rug, ten individual sheepskins are carefully selected and matched for colour, wool length, density and overall appearance before being expertly joined together.

Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for your rug to be made before shipping. Occasionally, additional time may be required to source enough closely matched sheepskins for your chosen colour.

As each rug is individually made, we recommend carefully checking your required dimensions and preferred colour before placing your order.

How to Care for a Large Sheepskin Rug

With the right care, genuine sheepskin can retain its softness, loft and beautiful natural appearance for many years.

Regular Care: Brush the wool periodically with a sheepskin care brush to help lift and separate the fibres and reduce matting. When practical, gently shake the rug or carefully vacuum using a low-suction setting to remove loose dust and debris.

Spot Cleaning: Attend to spills promptly. Blot gently using cold or lukewarm water and a detergent specifically suitable for genuine sheepskin. Avoid vigorous rubbing and try not to unnecessarily soak the leather beneath the wool.

Professional Cleaning: Although genuine sheepskin can be washed, we don't recommend washing a 10-pelt rug at home. A rug of this size becomes extremely heavy when wet and can be difficult to handle and dry evenly without affecting its shape or finish.

For a thorough clean, use a professional cleaner experienced with genuine sheepskin or leather-backed wool rugs.

What to Avoid: Do not use hot water, bleach, fabric softeners or conventional detergents containing enzymes. Avoid tumble drying and never dry wet sheepskin directly beside radiators, heaters or other strong heat sources.

Shipping & What to Expect When Your Rug Arrives

Large sheepskin rugs are carefully packed and compressed for shipping to help protect them while keeping the parcel as compact as practical during transit.

When first unpacked, the wool may appear slightly flattened or compressed. This is completely normal.

Lay your rug flat, give it a gentle shake and brush through the wool with a sheepskin care brush. This will help lift and separate the fibres, while the wool will continue to relax and regain its natural loft after unpacking.

Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for production before shipping. Once your rug has been completed and dispatched, tracking details will be emailed to you.

Sheepskin Rug Care

Keep your sheepskin soft and fresh with simple regular care.

Routine maintenance

Shake out your rug every couple of weeks and give it a gentle brush once or twice a month using a slicker or Bowron Care Brush. This keeps the fibres fluffy and removes dust in just a minute or two.

Spot cleaning

For small marks, use cold water and a natural soap or Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Dampen a soft scrub brush, apply a little soap, and gently work the area until clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry. Hang in the shade and allow it to air dry - never use direct heat or sunlight.

Deep cleaning

Hand wash only when needed using cold water and Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Avoid machine washing, bleach, or hot water as these can damage the leather backing.

Freshen up

To absorb odours or moisture, sprinkle baking soda onto the wool, leave for about an hour, then brush or vacuum it out.

With regular brushing and gentle care, your sheepskin rug will stay beautifully soft for years. Learn more on how to care for your wool rug with our care guide.

10-Pelt Sheepskin Rug | Genuine NZ Sheepskin FAQs

Will the dimensions or colour of this product vary from what I see online?
Yes, the size dimensions given for Kiwi Sheepskins Classic Premium Sheepskin Rug are approximate because it is made from natural wool sheepskins, and each pelt has slight variations. Also natural wool colours and shades may vary slightly from photos due to the unique characteristics of the fibre and natural tanning process.
How should I store this rug when not in use?
Store Kiwi Sheepskins Sheepskin Rugs in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Use a breathable cotton storage bag instead of plastic to allow air circulation, which helps prevent mildew and preserve the wool’s texture.
Is it okay to place this rug in high traffic areas?
Natural wool sheepskin rugs are durable and resilient, but heavy foot traffic can flatten the wool and cause uneven wear. They are best used in low to moderate traffic zones like bedrooms, living rooms and seating areas.
