Our Classic Premium Large Sheepskin Rugs are a beautiful way to bring natural warmth, softness and texture into your home. Made from carefully selected premium-grade sheepskins, their generous size makes them ideal for larger floor spaces, beside the bed, in front of a sofa or fireplace, or anywhere you want the luxurious feel of genuine sheepskin underfoot.

Made from New Zealand-grown sheepskins, each rug is carefully selected and tanned here in New Zealand using a gentle process without harsh chemicals. This helps preserve the natural softness, lustre and character of the wool while creating a durable rug designed to be enjoyed for years.

Available in Ivory White, Honey, Grey, Chocolate and Black. Our Ivory White is the sheep's natural creamy-white shade rather than a bright artificial white, so subtle cream and yellow undertones are completely natural and part of its authentic character.

Because genuine sheepskin is a natural product, no two rugs are exactly alike. Small variations in shape, wool length, texture and colour are natural and make every rug unique. For larger rugs, individual pelts are carefully selected and matched to create a beautifully balanced finished piece.

Our larger Classic Premium Sheepskin Rugs are made to order in New Zealand, allowing us to carefully select and match the individual sheepskins used to create your rug. Please allow approximately 2–3 weeks for your rug to be made before it is ready to ship.

As each rug is individually made for you, natural variations between pelts are part of the character and beauty of genuine sheepskin.

Caring for Your Sheepskin Rug

Regular Care: Give your rug a regular shake outdoors and gently brush the wool with a sheepskin care brush to lift the fibres, restore its fluffy appearance and help prevent matting.

Spot Cleaning: For small spills or marks, clean the affected area promptly using cold or lukewarm water and a suitable wool or sheepskin detergent. Avoid vigorous rubbing, as this can cause the wool to mat.

Machine Washing: When a deeper clean is required, your sheepskin can be washed on a cold or gentle wool cycle using a detergent specifically suitable for sheepskin, such as Woolskin Wool Wash. Drying: Allow your sheepskin to air dry naturally in the shade, away from direct sunlight, heaters and other sources of heat. Gently stretch and reshape the leather while it is still damp to help maintain its natural shape and flexibility.

Once completely dry, brush the wool thoroughly to help restore its naturally soft and fluffy finish.

Keep your sheepskin soft and fresh with simple regular care.

Routine maintenance

Shake out your rug every couple of weeks and give it a gentle brush once or twice a month using a slicker or Bowron Care Brush. This keeps the fibres fluffy and removes dust in just a minute or two.

Spot cleaning

For small marks, use cold water and a natural soap or Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Dampen a soft scrub brush, apply a little soap, and gently work the area until clean. Rinse thoroughly with cold water and blot dry. Hang in the shade and allow it to air dry - never use direct heat or sunlight.

Deep cleaning

Hand wash only when needed using cold water and Woolskin Sheepskin Shampoo. Avoid machine washing, bleach, or hot water as these can damage the leather backing.

Freshen up

To absorb odours or moisture, sprinkle baking soda onto the wool, leave for about an hour, then brush or vacuum it out.

To care for Kiwi Sheepskins Classic Premium Sheepskin Rug and other wool sheepskin rugs, regular maintenance is key. Shake the rug outdoors or use a gentle vacuum (no rotating brush) to remove dust and dirt. For spot cleaning, use a wool-safe detergent and dab gently instead of rubbing. Deep cleaning is best done by hand washing in cool water with a wool shampoo, then air drying flat away from direct heat or sunlight to avoid damaging the wool and leather backing.

Can I wash my sheepskin rug in a washing machine?

Most natural wool sheepskin rugs including premium grade ones should not be put in a regular washing machine because agitation and heat can damage the leather backing and matt the wool fibres. Hand washing in cool water with a wool-safe shampoo is generally recommended for deep cleaning. If machine washing is considered at all, only do so on a delicate wool cycle inside a protective laundry bag and check any care instructions first.
