Sheepskin Cushions and Gloves: A Guide to Cosy Winter Additions

A practical guide to our genuine sheepskin and lambskin cushions, gloves and mittens: materials, sizing, colours and care, all made in New Zealand.

Sheepskin earns its place on a couch or a pair of hands for the same reason it works on a bed or a car seat: the wool traps warm air close to the skin while staying breathable, so it keeps you warm without feeling heavy or synthetic. Our cushion and glove range uses that same genuine sheepskin and lambskin, just in smaller, more personal pieces. Here is what is actually in each one, and how to choose between them.

Sheepskin Cushions for the Couch, Chair or Bed

We carry two cushion styles, and they are built quite differently from each other despite both starting with a genuine New Zealand pelt.

Sheepskin Pillow & Cushion Cover, 35cm

This cover is made from a single lambskin pelt rather than smaller offcuts stitched together, which is part of why the wool reads as one continuous, even surface rather than a patchwork. It is single sided: the front is sheepskin, the zippered reverse is plain white fabric with a 33cm square pocket for your own cushion insert. With the wool overhang included, the finished piece measures roughly 43cm (17 inches) across.

It comes in Black, Sand, Chocolate, Grey, Honey and Ivory White. Because each one is cut from a real pelt, dye uptake varies slightly from piece to piece, so expect gentle natural variation rather than a flat, uniform tone. These are made to order, so once production starts the order cannot be cancelled, and exchanges or refunds are limited to genuine defects. Current lead times run from about 4 to 16 days depending on colour. Check the product page for live pricing and which colours are currently in stock.

Tibetan Long Wool Cushion

Where the 35cm cover is a cushion cover, this one is a finished cushion: long wool sheepskin on the front, a cotton velvet backing, and a recycled polyester inner, so there is nothing else to source or stuff. At 41 x 41cm (16 x 16 in), it sits slightly larger than the 35cm cover and suits a more relaxed, textural look, closer to the longer curly wool you would see in Scandinavian-style interiors.

It is available in several colourways, and stock moves around more than the smaller cover, so it is worth checking the product page before you fall in love with a specific shade.

Sheepskin and Lambskin Gloves for Cold Hands

Wool works the same way on your hands as it does on a couch: it insulates by trapping air, and it does that without the bulk of synthetic padding. We carry two genuine lambskin options, built for slightly different kinds of cold.

Four Peaks Lambskin Gloves

These are hand-crafted in New Zealand from slinkskin leather, sourced from newborn lambs that do not survive birth, by individual glove-makers rather than on a production line. They come in two finishes: black or tan suede with a soft curly wool lining, or black Nappa leather with a smoother, ironed wool interior for a more polished, fur-like feel. Both finishes carry a shower-proof treatment, and the Nappa leather in particular resists stains with very little upkeep. They are machine washable, and sized by measuring the fullest part of your dominant hand (excluding the thumb) against the sizing guide on the product page.

Lambskin Mittens

Mittens trade finger dexterity for warmth: keeping your fingers together rather than separated holds more warm air around your hand, which is why these tend to outperform gloves on genuinely cold days, think winter walks, early commutes or travel somewhere colder than home. Like the gloves, they pair a wool interior with a leather exterior, so expect the same natural variation in colour and wool texture from pair to pair that comes with any real hide.

Both styles are a natural alternative to heavily padded synthetic gloves. Treat them gently: avoid washing or soaking either pair, wipe away light marks with a soft, slightly damp cloth, and let them air dry at room temperature, away from direct sun, radiators or other direct heat. Skip the tumble dryer, bleach and ordinary laundry detergent, all of which can damage the leather and wool.

A Lighter Alternative

If you want warmth without full sheepskin bulk for milder days, our Possum Merino Gloves are worth a look. They are not sheepskin: the blend is possum fur and merino wool, which makes for a thinner, closer-fitting glove. A good option to have alongside a pair of lambskin gloves rather than instead of them, for days that do not call for the heavier pair.

Caring for Both

The same basic rules apply across cushions and gloves: keep them away from soaking and direct heat, spot clean rather than machine wash, and let natural colour variation be part of the material rather than a flaw.
